Handmade for Her: Framed Botanical Artwork & Card-Making for Mother’s Day. |Wednesday 25th February 2026
Led by Kate Charlton, Botanical Illustrator and Greeting Card Artist, with historical and botanical insights from Neil Crump, Founder of Asterion & Co.
Celebrate your mum’s favourite flower by returning to the simple, joyful act of creating something just for her. Think back to those carefree school days when you’d hand her a handmade card bursting with colour, love and unfiltered enthusiasm — now recreate that feeling as an adult, with intention, craft, and a touch of magic.
Give her something she’d least expect: a design painted by your own hand, with the added surprise of the original artwork framed for her to keep forever; a moment of childhood wonder, rediscovered.
Spend Wednesday 25th February 2026 creating in our reimagined 16th-century farmhouse, where tradition and creativity meet, with a seated three-course lunch included.
During this one-day painting workshop, you’ll paint an original artwork inspired by your mother’s favourite flower or plant. Something you’ll have told us in advance so we can source it specially for you to study and reimagine. We will then scan your painting and create a beautifully printed Mother’s Day card from it, while the original is professionally framed in your chosen mount and frame from our in-house selection.
Your mum receives double the joy: a bespoke card designed by you, and the surprise of unwrapping the matching framed original — a keepsake she will treasure for years.
Within a week of the class, both the printed card and the framed artwork will be ready for you, perfectly timed for gifting on Mothering Sunday, 15 March 2026.
Working alongside Kate Charlton, a Somerset-based botanical illustrator celebrated for her detailed and characterful greeting cards, you’ll spend the day immersed in colour, flowers and foliage. Kate will share her process for capturing natural form and texture in acrylic paint, guiding you through how she observes, sketches, and layers paint to bring your composition to life.
Neil will begin the morning with a short talk on the Mothering Sunday tradition and give you the historical background on the flower or plant you are painting, so you’ll be able to tell your Mum the story of the flowers or plant she most loves.
Through step-by-step demonstrations and individual support, Kate will help you develop your own composition. You’ll first work in pencil before moving into acrylic paint, learning how to mix tones, balance colour, and highlight fine botanical detail.
By the end of the day, you’ll have created a finished artwork which will then be professionally printed by Pennybatch Gallery, the same Somerset printmaker who produces Kate’s own collections, to create your card to present to your Mother (plus further cards so you 50 cards which your mum or you can use throughout the year).
At the close of the session, guided by Neil, you’ll choose a frame and mount colour for your artwork which will be sent for professional framing.
Within one week, you’ll receive the greetings card set (complete with your name printed on the back as the artist) and the framed picture (complete with packaging that you can send through the post if needed) - hand-delivered to your home.
This workshop on Wednesday 25th February 2026 includes:
A historical look at Mothering Sunday and the botanicals beloved by your Mother
Hands-on guidance in sketching and painting with acrylic paint from Kate Charlton
Access to the plant your mother loves (we’ll do our best given seasonality and availability)
All painting materials, and professional printing of 50 finished cards with envelopes
Option to personalise your card back text, including attributing you as the artist
Refreshments and a seated home-cooked lunch in the dining room
Hand delivery of cards and framed work to your home to ensure they arrive safely and well in time for Mothering Sunday
All abilities are warmly welcome. Whether you’re new to painting or an experienced artist seeking a creative escape in the spirit of camaraderie, this day offers a balance of learning, craftsmanship, and a day thinking about our mums and all they have done for us in our lives.

About Kate Charlton
Kate Charlton transforms flowers into lasting artworks, drawing on her background in floristry to create botanical illustrations filled with memory, emotion and connection.
Her greeting-card business grew from the moment customers began framing her cards, inspiring her to embrace them as miniature works of art with their own personality. Based in Somerset, Kate takes daily inspiration from the landscape and her garden, translating light, texture and the turn of the seasons into each delicate brushstroke.

Your Hosts
This course is hosted by Neil Crump (Founder, Asterion & Co.) at The Old Vicarage in Leigh-upon-Mendip — a beautifully reimagined 16th-century farmhouse surrounded by a richly varied garden which, though only just emerging from winter, will already be dotted with early bulbs in flower.
Our guest team and gardening staff will be on hand throughout the day to offer guidance, hospitality and insight, bringing Asterion & Co.’s heritage-inspired learning philosophy into every corner of your visit.
Weather permitting, you’ll enjoy a tour of the grounds and see the kitchen garden, ornamental borders and wilding areas beginning to come back to life.
