This isn't about nostalgia or preserving tradition for its own sake. Nor do we believe innovation is inherently better simply because it's new. We believe the best ideas come from understanding both, choosing wisely and carrying forward what still has value.

Alongside expert tuition, we explore the stories, history and cultural context behind each subject, helping guests understand not only how something is done, but why it has endured. Whether you're learning to grow vegetables, create art, make something by hand or explore ideas about living well, we hope you'll leave feeling more inspired, more capable and more connected to both the generations who came before us and the people learning alongside you today.

All workshops take place at The Old Vicarage in Leigh-on-Mendip, Somerset. We're just 10 minutes from Frome, 15 minutes from Bruton and around 25 minutes south of Bath.

While many guests join us from the South West, others travel from across the UK, with some making a journey of several hundred miles. For many, the workshop is part of a wider visit to Somerset, allowing time to explore Somerset's gardens, countryside and independent towns.

Not at all. Unless otherwise stated, our workshops are designed so that complete beginners can feel relaxed and confident from the moment they arrive. Our tutors adapt their teaching to each guest, so everyone can learn at their own pace.

You'll often find yourself around the table with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are discovering a subject for the very first time, while others have years of experience. We find that this mix creates generous conversations and unexpected moments of learning for everyone.

Our workshops are led by experienced practitioners who are recognised experts in their field. They provide expert tuition, practical guidance and the knowledge that comes from years of experience.

As your host, Neil Crump welcomes guests at the beginning of the day, setting the scene for the workshop through the lens of Heritage-Inspired Learning™. By sharing the history, traditions and cultural context that surround each subject, he helps frame the day before handing over to the tutor.

Together, this combination of expert teaching and thoughtful context gives each workshop a depth that goes beyond simply learning a new skill.

We intentionally keep our workshops small, typically with six to eight guests. This creates a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of individual guidance, thoughtful conversation and time to get to know the other people around the table.

We believe some of the richest learning comes not only from the tutor, but from the conversations shared throughout the day.

Absolutely. Many of our guests come on their own, and you'll always receive a warm welcome.

We intentionally create workshops where there's time to learn, share a meal and enjoy unhurried conversation.

We believe the setting is an important part of the experience. Whenever the weather and the workshop allow, we make the most of the gardens and grounds of The Old Vicarage, with many workshops taking place partly outdoors.

Gardening workshops are naturally based mainly in the garden, while art and craft workshops often move between our indoor teaching spaces and the wider landscape. Individual workshop pages explain what to expect.

Every workshop includes expert tuition, all materials, a seated vegetarian lunch, afternoon tea and refreshments throughout the day. Any specialist equipment or take-home items are listed on the individual workshop page and are included.

There are no hidden extras.

Yes. You'll be welcomed with refreshments on arrival, followed by a freshly prepared seated lunch, afternoon tea and drinks throughout the day.

Yes. All meals are vegetarian, and we routinely provide gluten-free and dairy-free options. After you've booked, we'll contact you to ask about any dietary requirements or food allergies. We'll always do our best to accommodate your needs.

Most workshops run from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Any variations will be clearly shown on the individual workshop page.

Most workshops simply require comfortable clothing suitable for the activity and the weather. If there's anything specific you'll need, it will be clearly listed on the individual workshop page.

The British weather is all part of gardening, so a little rain rarely changes our plans. We recommend bringing suitable footwear and a waterproof jacket and hat, particularly for gardening workshops.

We'll always do our best to keep you dry and comfortable. We have a fleet of umbrellas on hand, pop-up gazebos for shelter, and can retreat to the polytunnel or glasshouse during passing showers before heading back outside. If severe weather affects the workshop, we'll contact guests directly.

The Old Vicarage is a historic house with mature gardens, so some areas include uneven paths, steps and other features that may not be suitable for everyone.

We want as many people as possible to enjoy their visit. If you have any accessibility or mobility requirements, please get in touch before booking. We'll be happy to discuss the workshop, explain the route around the house and gardens, any potential limitations, and the reasonable adjustments we may be able to make so you can decide whether the experience is right for you.

Yes. Complimentary parking is available on site. On arrival, one of the team will guide you to a parking space.

While Asterion & Co. is not a residential venue, many guests travelling from further afield choose to stay locally and make the most of their visit to Somerset. We've put together a list of recommended accommodation, ranging from cosy village inns to boutique hotels, and we're always happy to help you plan your stay.

Some workshops also include residential options, where these are offered. Details will be included on the relevant workshop page.

Absolutely. An Asterion & Co. workshop is a thoughtful gift that offers far more than a day out, combining learning, hospitality and time well spent together.

Yes. Depending on the workshop, there may be opportunities to purchase plants, antiques, books, tools, artwork and other carefully selected items from Asterion & Co. and our guest collaborators.

Yes. Our programme changes with the seasons, offering workshops in gardening, art, craft and Life School throughout the year. Each season brings new subjects inspired by the rhythms of the garden and the heritage that shapes our teaching.

Our cancellation policy is outlined in our booking terms and conditions. If you're unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible and we'll always do our best to help.

Yes. You're very welcome to photograph your day.

We ask every guest whether they're happy to appear in photographs, and we always respect their choice. Some guests enjoy being included in images, while others prefer not to be photographed. We simply ask everyone to extend the same courtesy to fellow guests by respecting their preferences. No one is under any obligation to appear in photographs.

As much as we love dogs, we ask guests not to bring them to workshops unless they are registered assistance dogs.

Asterion & Co. is home to two much-loved dogs, but during workshops they are kept away from guests. If you have a severe dog allergy or any concerns about this, please get in touch before booking and we'll be happy to discuss whether the workshop is suitable for you.
